6 days of Shawwal

Several Hadiths mention the fasting of the six days of Shawwal. The Prophet, peace and salvation be upon him, said: Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and follows it six of the month of Shawwal will free himself from his sins like the day he was born from his mother's womb.

In another Hadith, the Prophet says: Whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan, then fasts six days of the month of Shawwal, will equal the one who fasts in perpetuity. In this Hadith the scholars explain that the word 'Dahr' translated here by perpetuity translates better to a lunar year. By the way, in Arabic the word 'Dahr' can be translated as 'perpetuity' or 'year'.

When to start young chawal?

You can start the 6 days of chawal fast from the 2nd day of the month, i.e. the second. The Malikites see that the 6 days can be fasted throughout the year and not just the month of Chawal.

When does the month of Shawwal end?

In the Hijri Calendar the end of the month of Shawwal is expected on 8/5/2024.

Which day to fast?

You can fast any day, the 6 days of fasting do not have to be consecutive, you can also combine them with white days. However, it is forbidden to fast on the first day of Eid Al-Fitr (second day of the month of Shawwal).

The fact of directly chaining the fast of the six days of Shawwal from the second day of Eid el-fitr allows Muslims to continue at the same pace and the same momentum as the month of Ramadan and quickly put an end to these days of fasting, because some do not succeed in succeeding in the fast of these six days by constantly postponing it. However, on this point there are differences in the different schools.

Indeed, the Hanafites and the Chafiites recommend to fast them continuously immediately after the day of Eid seen, it seems, the text of the Hadith. The Hambalites do not favor either choice.

According to the Maliki school, it has not been proven that the Prophet fasted for six continuous days during Shawwal. He fasted, as he used to do, on Monday and Thursday, the 'white' days: 13, 14 and 15 of the lunar month (June 5, 6 and 7) when the moon is fully visible. Therefore, the Malikites recommend doing the Shawwal fast separately.

Events of the month of Shawwal

The first event is the marriage of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, with Aicha, in the first year of the hijir. During the second year of the heir the Muslims confronted Bani Quanoukaa. Finally during the 3rd year there was the famous battle of Ouhoud, where the Muslims lost Hamza Ibn Al-Motalib (uncle of the Prophet) and dozens of Muslims.
