Salat Janaza: Mortuary Prayer

Armi the rights of the Muslim on his Muslim brothers and the community, salat janaza. After having made the mortuary ablutions, the deceased has the right to a prayer before his burial which is called Salat janaza or the mortuary prayer.

It is an important stage in the life of Muslims, a stage which must be accomplished within the rules of Islam. We explain how to organize a good salat janaza.

How to do the janaza prayer?

As for how to perform the funeral prayer (salat janaza), the four schools of jurisprudence agree that it takes four takbirates (Allahu akbar). It is necessary to raise the arms for each takbir for the hanbalites and chafiites. The Malikites and Hanafites only require raising the arms for the first takbira. To start the prayer you have to do the Takbir.

After the first takbira

After the first Allahou akbar, you must read La Fatiha (it is not an obligation for Malikites and Hanafites)

The 2nd takbira

After the second, one must recite the salat ibrahimya on the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him. An obligatory according to the Shafi’is and the Hanbalis.

After the third takbira

Afterwards he makes the Dua for the dead (compulsory according to the Shafi’is and Hanbalis).

At the 4th

He can do tasleem directly according to Hanbalis and Hanafi. For others, you have to do Dua for yourself first.

Finally the taslime (as for the other prayers). Two according to the Hanafis and Shafi’is, only one for the others.

Who can participate in the salat janaza?

Salat janaza woman

Both men and women can participate in salat janaza. There is no prohibition for women to perform this prayer. The Prophet’s wife, peace be upon him, Aisha and other women prayed for Saad bin Abi Waqqas upon his death. The prophet had said β€œβ€.

The merit of the funeral prayer

There is no doubt about the merit of the funeral prayer and that it is one of the reasons for relieving the dead and interceding for him, with the permission of God, especially if there are many assistance from the Muslim community. The Messenger of Allah, may the prayers and peace of God be upon him and his family, said: There is no believer who dies and a group of Muslims prays for him and who reaches three rows that he is forgiven.

Invocation of salat janaza

Lord, grant your servant a privileged place in paradise.

The Prophet was saying this Dua: O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and sound and forgive him, honor the place where he settles and make his entrance wide; wash it with water and snow and greet and purify it of its sin as you clean a white garment of dirt. O Allah, give him a house better than his house and a family better than his house and a family better than his family and a wife better than his wife, and admit him to Paradise and save him from Hell.
