What is the 1st Moharram?

Muharram marks the beginning of the Muslim year. It is celebrated by the majority of Muslims around the world.

When is the 1st Muharram?

The 1st Muharram will take place on 19/7/2023. It marks the beginning of the month and the year of the Islamic calendar.

Muslim New Year

The Muslim New Year is celebrated on the night of the first Muharram. Traditions differ from one country to another, but generally a hearty dinner is prepared to celebrate the beginning of the Muslim year.

Achoura

Achoura, is the tenth day of Muharram and it is Sunnah to fast it; This is because the Prophet “when he came to Medina, he saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura, so he said: What is this? They said: This is a righteous day, this is a day when God saved the children of Israel from their enemy, so Moses, peace be upon him, fasted. Reported by Al-Bukhari. The day before it is called Tasu'a, and it is desirable to fast it or fast on the eleventh day. The Ashura fast was compulsory, but it was abrogated by the month of Ramadan. It has been said that the word Ashura is an Arabicized Hebrew meaning Ashur, which is the tenth of Tishrei, the first month of the Hebrew calendar, and it was at that time in the year 4382 Hebrew.

Why Muharram is the 1st month

When opinion settled in the year 17 AH on the choice of the year of migration as the beginning of the Islamic calendar, a dilemma arose is posed; Muslims had to choose a month to start their calendar, just as they chose a year for this start. Some companions suggested to Omar, may God be pleased with him, may this month be Chaabane, and some of them suggested Ramadan, but in the end we followed the advice of Othman bin Affane by adopting Muharram as the beginning of the Hijri year on the grounds that this month follows the month in which people left their pilgrimage. This is the month that the Arabs chose as the beginning of their year before the advent of Islam.
